In order to write a compare and contrast essay, you will first need to think of a topic to write about. In fact, whereas with most essays you simply need to identify a single idea for your topic, with this style of academic paper you will be examining at least two different things; therefore, in many ways you will need to think of two different topics.
This style of academic paper can be used in conjunction with a wide range of different subjects. It may be that you have been asked to write a compare and contrast paper for a historical subject, in which case you may wish to consider two national leaders from the past, two different battles, or any two other to aspects of history. Alternatively, when writing a compare and contrast essay for a subject such as geography, you may wish to analyse and discuss two different countries.
Once you have an idea in mind for your title, you will then need to start making preparations. As part of your preparations, it is a good idea to create a plan of what you will need to include in your paper, as well as any research methods you may be required to use in order to find out relevant information. As soon as you have an idea of what might be required for your paper, you will then need to establish a timeframe for when you will do the research and writing part of the work.
With your plan in place, and some ideas about what you wish to discuss, you will then be ready to write your introduction. As part of the introduction, you will need to give a brief background relating to the topic that you will be discussing, as well as perhaps giving more details about the two aspects that you will be comparing and contrasting.
You do not need going in to too much detail, as you will be providing most of your content in the body section. However, you need to provide the reader with a good idea of what it is that they should expect from your work.
Once you have written the body section and the conclusion, you may wish to go back to the introduction to ensure that it is still relevant. It may be that you have thought of new ideas whilst writing the rest of the essay, and you may therefore need to makes some adjustments to ensure that it is still accurate.
